captioned by closed captioning services, inc. breaking news in the east bay. police in the process of recovering a bed from alameda creek in fremont near sequoia road. >> we are going to give you more information. this discovery was made 8:00 this morning by somebody walking along a bridge over that creek. no word on the body's identity or the cause of death. you can see a lot of investigators are on the scene many we'll continue to gather more information. good morning i'm kristen sze. and i'm cheryl jennings. we also have developing news in san francisco affecting thousands of muni riders for hours after a body was found on the tracks.

>> light rail service just resumed in the past half hour. >> it had been shutdown because of a fatality at the montgomery station. commuters scrambled get on shuttle buses. muni says a man was walking on the tracks and made it the length of nearly two football fields before he was hit and killed. amy hollyfield joins us from the montgomery street with -- -- station where mo. >> reporter: it was a rough day for commuters, crowds, confusion. people who use public transition seem to take things in stride well they make quick decisions. they handled it well, one thing they like information. they like to know what is going on. commuters had to do serious zig -- zigzagging through san francisco how late are

you? >> about 45 minutes. >> as far as west portal they had to reroute to balboa park and we had to ride here probably about an extra hour added to my commute. >> reporter: muni service was shutdown after train hit a man in the tunnel. >> it appears someone was walking in between embarcadero and montgomery station on a catwalk. that's where contact was made. >> reporter: officials don't know why the man was on the tracks. everyone onboard the train that hit him is okay. while police tried to figure out why this happened, muni tried to deal with stranded commuters. bart gave free rides to beam within the city limits. muni added extra bus. >> we have as many shuttles as we can on market and they are carrying people, heavy loads, we are trying to provide as much service as possible. >> reporter: the mood seemed mellow. people we spoke with seemed most upset by the fact that

they didn't know what was going on. >> i would have liked a little more information. >> we were standing and heard no trains. we don't know, nobody to announce, that's it. >> we are used to rolling with muni. we know they are doing their best. we are doing our best. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with police. they say the man was in the tunnel walking westbound the train was headed eastbound. they still don't know why he was this there and obviously he was not supposed to be in that tunnel. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. to the latest on superstorm sandy. unprecedented measures to relieve crisis brought on by the storm. long lines of people trying to get gas in linden, new jersey. fuel is one of the top concerns new york governor cuomo signed an order waiving a requirement that tankers

>> the president: hello ohio! >> reporter: despite the small rise in the unemployment rate president obama pumped up ohio this morning. >> the president: today our businesses created nearly 5 1/2 million new jobs. companies hired more workers in october than any time in the last eight months. >> reporter: the president admits there is more work to be done. but says this is a pattern of real progress that includes a stronger auto industry, thanks to his bailout. romney is ing the numbers another way at a rally in wisconsin this morning he said the report is a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual standstill. >> he said he was going to lower the unemployment rate down to 5.2%. today it is 7.9% and that's nine million jobs short of what he promised. unemployment is higher today than when barack obama took office. >> reporter: some say the report could have been a tipping point in the election.

the california highway patrol is calling it its first night of lending a hand in oakland a big success. overnight chp joined oakland police in patrolling the city that has seen a spike in crime. >> reporter: oakland police happy to have chp officers on the streets with them to deal with the criminal element. opd has long said if you want to impact the crime rate in this city you have to get cooperation of the citizens. a short time ago, that made a big impact on some elementary schools.

the chp helicopter is a serious attention-getter and it did that today at the health and safety fair. oakland pd brought out special vehicles, squad cars with cruisers like they were last night on the first night of oakland's operation impact. chp says it was a success. >> last night we had 11 to 12 arrests which included for driving under the influence, warrant arrests, stolen vehicle, drug vials, things of that nature >> reporter: today's event a far cry from what happens too often, 30 minutes after operation impact began at 7:00 last night armed robbery. the night before the killing of a businessman at his store on international boulevard. homicide is up 20% in year, many unsolved due to lack of cooperation by witnesses who don't trust cops which brings us back to today's event. >> conversations with our students, they -- there's

elementary school principal charged with failing to report molestation of 8-year-old girl if convicted lyn vijayendran faces up to six months in jail. the former principal at o.b. whaley trpltry tried to explain to the jury request they did not report a disturbing incident involving a teacher. she said she stayed quiet after the teacher convinced her he blindfolded that student as part of a lesson plan. in fairfield police are looking for a couple stealing mail in the middle of the day. neighborhood watch group provided this video to police it shows a man and woman checking mailboxes and taking mail in the laurel creek area. they've hit half a dozen homes. police say one dives while the other steals. they are -- one drives while the other steals. they are hviding people not to leave mail in their boxes and pick up -- mail everyday.
